Samsung Galaxy S5 to arrive in January

Samsung started selling the Samsung Galaxy S4 flagship handset in late April 2013, after unveiling it on March 13 at Samsung Mobile Unpacked in New York. The high-end Android smartphone quickly became the fastest selling Samsung ever launched with over 20 million units sold in the first two months. Unfortunately, it seems Samsung is not happy at all with the handset's sales so far and the Galaxy S4 may soon get a successor.

According to Samsung insiders who spoke to Korean news source Naver, the company will unveil the Galaxy S5 in January and the smartphone should become available worldwide by the end of February.

The sources did not mention anything about the specs of this upcoming handset, but Samsung's new 64-bit Exynos 5430 chip could be the Korean company's answer to the processor used by Apple's iPhone 5, not to mention the popular Snapdragon 800 chip used by more and more Android high-end devices as time goes by.

More than a new processor, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will feature a completely different design with a premium carbon fiber body or even one using metal, as well as a 16 MP ISOCELL camera with optical image stabilization and enhanced low light capabilities.

All the above should be taken with a grain of salt, since nothing is official yet and this may prove to be only an update to the Galaxy S4 and not a whole new generation.

February 28 Update:

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has been uncovered earlier this week at the Unpacked 5 event and features a new design, larger screen and improved rear camera. The handset now also stands out thanks to its perforated back cover pattern and the list of colors available - Shimmery White, Charcoal Black, Electric Blue, and Copper Gold.

The new flagship will come loaded with Android 4.4.2 KitKat and sports a quad-core 2.5 GHz processor (the octa-core version could be announced soon as well) with 2 GB of memory and up to 32 GB of internal storage, a 5.1-inch full HD screen and a 16 MP camera in the back.
