In case you wondered just how big Facebook is, by the end of 2014 over a third of the world's internet users will be liking, commenting and sharing

There will be nearly three billion internet users by the end of 2014 according to a new study by the United Nations International Telecommunications Union.

This incredible figure exists thanks to the huge technological uptake by the developing world, in fact by the end of this year, over two-thirds of all internet users will be from those countries.

To put that into perspective Facebook's latest figures show that it has around 1.1 billion users meaning that by 2014 over a third of the people that have access to the internet will also have a Facebook profile.

One of the most damming figures though is that just 10 per cent of those people will have access to what the ITU classes as 'Broadband speed' internet.

Whether that figure alarms or impresses you it's actually a tiny percentage compared to the number of people that will be using mobile phones.

According to the ITU there will be over seven billion people using mobile phones by the end of the year. Interestingly though 2014 has actually been the slowest uptake in recent years, presumably due to the emerging markets boom having now started to level out.
