Fitbit designers create wearable tracker for canines

The designers behind Fitbit's activity trackers have taken their wearable tech expertise to a whole new level; Whistle is the new activity monitor for man's best friend.

NewDealDesign, a San Francisco-based studio, has developed a new animal-friendly activity tracker designed specially for canines.

Essentially, the Whistle tracker offers a window into a dog’s life, allowing pet owners to connect with their pets and identify prospective health-issues before they arise.

Whistle allows pet owners to track exactly how much exercise (or sleep) their dogs are getting.

The gadget connects onto the dog’s collar and collects data based on how much activity, like running or walking your dog's had. It will also log water consumed and sleep patterns before syncing it all to the Whistle smartphone app.

It operates via Bluetooth or WiFi, which means distance isn't an issue and you can track your dog's progress even when they're in another person's care.

The Whistle app is compatible with both Apple and Android smartphones. Also, the developers have ensured that more than one person can download and see the same data from the same account. Meaning greater care for your pup.

At $129 (£77), it costs roughly the same as conventional trackers like the Fitbit Flex and Jawbone UP24.
